What is Outsider Art?

topic posted Sun, February 24, 2008 - 10:10 PM by  ArtistPower
Is it simply kitsch, collage, or not taking professional classes? Is there some line that can be pointed to that defines a person as Outsider or Insider art?

Reading artforum gives me some idea, but I'm curious about people's opinions regarding outsider art, and even moreso I wonder if the fashion industry and 'high art' is then Insider Art.

It is also called 'art brut' and is suposed to come directly from the unconscious of whoever makes it without any traning or learning whatsoever. It can be related to 'naive' art too.

I am not sure as a term it is not a little patronising. My work got called that to begin with as it avwedly involved a psychic process, but Ihave actually studies and been on courses too.

Okay, so is there a decided difference between Surrealism and Art Brut?

Perhaps it's that surrealism is deliberately attempting to plump the subconscious while outsider art is created subconsciously?

Inside and outside refer to who's work might be allowed in the "gallery".
But as Treiops says they are unmoved by modern trends ,and thus they're art is arguably more authentic ,more real, more substantive, which EVENTUALLY will cause the masses to clamor for it. It is at that point that it will be accepted within the hallowed and overpriced,oh-so-self-important walls of the gallery...

It seems like most outsider artists never call themselves such, only other people who observe their art do. I kind of see the Outsider tag as a description of artists who are unaware or uninterested in set genres and so accidentally come up with their own highly idiosyncratic styles.

    C'mon can't I be a non-credentialed insider? Pleassse??

I'll bow to the insider creed... I swear, I will.

I am certainly not naive. That's a poor label.
